Ed-tech Company Brainly Fires Almost All Employees from India Team

Poland based Ed-tech company Brainly has laid off several employees globally including almost all team members (approx. 35) from its India team. Impacted Brainly employees were working out of the UB City office in Bengaluru.

Reports close to the matter suggested that layoffs have happened across departments – support, marketing, in-house academic team and product. Moreover, it also highlighted that 50% of fired employees were hired around 2 to 5 months back.

A few of the employees took to Twitter to sharing their experiences. One affected employee said, “Layoffs are sad, but what is worse is how they are handled. CEO comes on the call — announces India shutdown and within 2 minutes slack and emails shut off, laptops disconnected. Everyone was shocked. And then no severance.”

After laying off almost everyone from the India team, the company in an email response to VC Circle said, “We decided to stop offering paid plans to users of Brainly.in and its entire community will use Brainly for free. This is unrelated to our global business”.

Apart from this, as per a report by Crunchbase News tally, more than 45,000 workers in the US Tech sector have been affected by the huge job cuts so far in 2022. This includes both the big and small tech companies namely Microsoft, Snap, Intel, Twitter, Netflix & more.

Tech companies are once again tapping the breaks on the hiring process as they deal with higher interest rates, global economic uncertainty, to name a few reasons. Following the layoffs by several tech companies, Facebook parent Meta is also preparing for massive layoffs this week. As per a report from Wall Street Journal, the large-scale layoffs could affect thousands of workers!
