Pure Storage Introduces Cloud Disaster Recovery Services (DRaaS) for SaaS VMs

New Delhi: Pure Storage, a frontrunner in flash memory technology, is now expanding its reach in the field of disaster recovery for the workloads of virtual machines. This strategic move seeks to improve the functionality of their container suite, Portworx.

DRaaS Pure Protect is the latest addition to the vendor’s portfolio, which provides businesses with disaster recovery solutions. It allows companies to seamlessly mirror their on-site VMware vSphere virtual machines in the AWS cloud as EC2 instances. This flexible service empowers customers to easily convert these cloud instances into vSphere virtual machines, facilitating a smooth restoration of on-site operations.

Pure Storage emphasizes that their service is exclusively designed for disaster recovery purposes. It focuses on enabling the restoration of infrastructure but does not include native backup capabilities. According to Krista Macomber, Analyst at Futurum Group, Pure Storage is making a clear distinction between various data management roles.

According to her, customers will require comprehensive solutions for both data backup and disaster recovery, as these two functions serve different purposes and come with distinct recovery point objectives (RPOs) and recovery time objectives (RTOs). In her words, “they’re different use cases and provide different RPOs and RTOs. You’re going to want both.”

With Pure Protect DRaaS, customers can create multiple restore points and clean EC2 environments for disaster recovery. This service is available as a standalone option, with pricing determined by the total terabytes monitored through vSphere. The company plans to introduce vSphere-to-vSphere replication in future updates.

Moreover, it introduced energy and power guarantees for hardware lifecycle management. Customers who choose Pure Evergreen//One can receive an upfront payment based on estimated power consumption, while other purchase options come with energy efficiency and capacity density guarantees.

These initiatives aim to highlight power consumption in contracts. The consoles also offer features for tracking assets, subscriptions, and data protection levels.
