The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has developed ‘BharOS’ that can benefit India’s almost 100 crore mobile phone users. Developed by JandK Operations Private Limited and incubated at IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, BharOS can be installed on commercial off-the-shelf handsets.

IIT Madras’ director V Kamakoti said, “BharOS Service is a Mobile Operating System built on a foundation of trust, with a focus on providing users more freedom, control, and flexibility to choose and use only the apps that fit their needs.” The operating system is currently provided to organizations with strict privacy and security requirements. It is ideal for users who deal with sensitive information.

BharOS service comes up with valuable features like BharOS No Default Apps (NDA) that enables users to use only those apps that they trust or are familiar with. IIT Madras stated that this approach allows users to gain more control and flexibility to use only those apps that suit their needs. This India-made operating system for smartphones aims to revolutionize the way users think about security on their devices.

BharOS is designed to be used across a range of devices such as mobile devices, desktops and laptops.
