Best Online Exam Software for Windows in 2026

Some exam systems or proctoring tools may detect certain screenshot or screen-capture activity, while a basic website often cannot reliably know that you pressed a screenshot key. Some secure exam browsers can also restrict screen capture altogether.

So there isn’t a universal answer - it depends on the specific exam platform, browser, operating system, and monitoring software being used.

Basically, an online exam system handles the whole exam process digitally. The teacher or admin creates the exam, adds questions, sets the time limit and marks, and then shares the exam link or login details with students.

Students log in from their computer or phone and take the exam within the given time. The system records their answers and, for objective questions, can automatically calculate the score once they submit.

Depending on the software, it can also include things like question banks, random questions, proctoring, and browser restrictions. After the exam, teachers can check results, download reports, and see how students performed without having to calculate everything manually.

Honestly, online exams are pretty simple once you get the hang of them. Basically, the teacher or institute creates the exam on an online exam platform and shares a link or login details with students. You just log in, answer the questions within the given time, and submit the test online.

For MCQs and other objective questions, the software usually checks the answers and calculates the score automatically. Some platforms also have features like online proctoring, time limits, and browser restrictions to reduce cheating. Once the exam is over, students can usually see their results, while teachers get reports on scores and overall performance.

If you’re giving an online exam on a computer for the first time, it’s actually pretty simple. Usually, you just open the exam link provided by your school, college, or exam organizer and log in with your details.

Before starting, make sure your internet connection is stable and your computer is working properly. Once the exam starts, read the instructions, answer the questions, and keep an eye on the timer. When you’re done, review your answers if there’s time and click the submit button.

Most online exam platforms save your answers automatically, but I’d still avoid closing the browser or refreshing the page unless the instructions specifically tell you to.

I’ve tried a few quiz makers for teaching, and honestly, I’d pick based on how you actually want to use it.

• Kahoot!: Great if you want something fun and live in the classroom.
• Quizizz: More useful if you want students to complete quizzes at their own pace.
• Google Forms: Also a simple option if you mainly need basic quizzes and automatic grading.

For me, ease of creating questions, reports, and how easy it is for students to join matter more than having a ton of extra features.
